LOCAL RIDERS ACCESS GROUP

Tina Irving  is Chairperson of the local group involved with improving access for horse riders in the County.  You can see details of existing routes  which are continually being updated as we get more routes opened up.  More information on the work of the group at http://www.caithness.org/horses/access/index.htm.

Horse riding routes in Caithness

The local riders access group  was formed in July 2002 to address the problem of lack of off road riding in the County and to lobby the Council and other organisations to provide a network of bridlepaths in the far north of Scotland.

These are the links to existing rides as at 01-06-03 and are updated as the group identifies more routes which are available for public use:

Auckengill - Keiss - routes in this area are currently under development - contact Janine Wilbraham for the latest details. There are two sections which will be opened up after work is completed, hopefully around May 2003.

Newtonhill
Dunnet
Scarfskerry/Barrock - currently under development.  Contact Tina Irving for the latest details.

Forest Enterprise rides - contact the Forest District Office for info on which forests are freely accessible - keys are required for some routes.  Tel:  01862 810359.

    Camster
    Achairn
    Rumster

The group are in touch with Forest Enterprise with regard to future development.  Contact Janine Wilbraham for further details.

Loch More

Quintfall Forest - It was mentioned at the public meeting in April 2003 that there is free access to the Forest.  This is not now the case.  Please contact Tina to receive an update, email Tina Irving

Dunnet Riders meet every 6 weeks at the Dunnet Head tearooms.  As at 21st May, they had had two meetings and excellent progress is being made.  The next meeting is 27th June at 7.30pm and thereafter on 8th August at 7.30pm.  The meeting on 27th June will focus on Dunnet Forest.  Please register your interest by email, as I may need to book a bigger room! Email Tina for further details.

There is more information about the work of the group at http://www.caithness.org/horses/access/index.htm

There is currently a consultative document being distributed by the SNH - the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.  It is very important that all countryside users, especially riders, and landowners input to the document before 30th June.  It can be downloaded from http://www.snh.org.uk

Contact Janine Wilbraham [email protected] or [email protected] for further information.
