Forestry Commission land offers great opportunities for riding away from road traffic and the Society is working closely with Forest Enterprise to produce better access for horse riders and drivers.

Access for horses and their riders

In 1998 Forest Enterprise and the British Horse Society agreed a new deal for horse riders on Forestry Commission land.

This agreement gives permission for free access to many forests managed by Forest Enterprise , particularly in Scotland, Wales and northern England.  In the busier and more fragile forests, such as those in southern England, permits will be needed and the Forest Enterprise work together with local riders to improve and look after access.

What does this mean?

If you want to ride in a Forestry Commission forest contact your local office.  They will be able to tell you where you can ride and where you will need a permit.  Some forests may be closed from time to time due to forest work or other events taking place.  If this happens we will put notices up at the forest gate to let you know when access changes.

NB: From the CRAG chair: Be aware that husky training takes place in some forests, but is usually finished by 10:30a.m.  If your horse is nervous in any way, it may be as well to avoid riding in the Forest before then.  Please contact the Forestry office for details.  The owners are very considerate to other users of the Forest, this is just to make you aware that you may encounter them on the track.

Horse Concordat - taken from the map

"Permission is granted for free access to ride or lead a horse in the woodlands shown on this map, in accordance with the permit issued at 231 Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh, EH12 7AT, on 8 March 1999.  This permission is valid from 1 April 2001 to 31 March 2002, unless varied by the Forest District Manager, such variations to be notified at the entrance to each area of woodland.

This permission does not permit the carrying out of any commercial horse riding activity on Forestry Commission land."
