An Annular Solar Eclipse took place just after dawn on at 3.45a.m. Saturday 31 May, 2003, in the Arctic, North Atlantic and Scotland.  Unfortunately, although Dunnet Head was billed as one of the best places to see it, there was a mist and we didn't see anything! Ah well, everyone came to the Information Point for breakfast and had a good chat about it!

Annular eclipses happen when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, leaving only a small ring ( Latin "annulus") visible. The North of Scotland was one of the best and most accessible places from which to view the eclipse, with places like Durness, Dunnet Head and Duncansby Head coming high on the list of top vantage points.

The Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board did a great job of promoting the fact that one of the best places to view the eclipse was Dunnet Head, and that it was not advisable not try to view this eclipse with the naked eye. More advice on the fact sheet.  It was a real boost for businesses in the north. Our B&B was booked out since January, and we had people phoning trying to find accommodation until the last minute.  There were even people camping in the field!
