WALK TO CHAPEL GEO
Start point: Dwarwick Pier ND206714 Explorer Map 451 scale 1:25000.
The walk from Dwarwick Pier to Chapel Geo takes about an hour and commences with a steep hill designed to test your fitness level! From the Pier, follow the track through the kissing gates, and on upwards. At the top you are rewarded with a splendid view of Dunnet Bay, Dunnet Forest and the surrounding countryside. There are many inlets (geos) and in the summer months you can enjoy the splendour of the heather and pretty sundew flowers, amongst others. The path is well defined and not too tortuous after the first steep section. Take care not to go too close to the cliff edge, and take particular precautions when the ground is wet. The scenery is magnificent - Holborn Head can be seen in the distance, as well as Scrabster Harbour and Thurso. The remains of the chapel are at grid reference ND 187729 - Explorer map 451.
Detailed information about the site can be found in the Canmore database which is maintained by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland at http://www.rcahms.gov.uk. The basic information is that the site is the remains of a small, drystone chapel, said to have been a hermitage or place of penance. There are other ruins in the vicinity, but it is not known if there is any association with the chapel.
See some photos of the route.
