'A Head of our Times'

Poem by Sydney Scott, son of John Scott who was Principal Keeper at the Dunnet Head lighthouse from 1952 - 57

Have you ever sat alone upon a cliff top
And watched the terns go screaming overhead
And seen the rocks below you
Where the fulmars make their nest
And spit at any stranger they detest?
Have you ever watched the fulmars pay the upstream
In the currents that sweep up from down below?
They move into position
But never flap their wings
They are smiling, you can almost hear them sing.
Have you ever seen the multitude of puffins
The razor bills, the guillemots, the gulls?
They screech at one another
A cacophony of sound

Have you ever heard the soughing of the wavelets
As they gently massage pebbles on the beach?
They step into the rock pools
They sink into the sand
If only you could catch them in your hand.

Have you ever crunched amongst the shells at ebb tide
Or left your sunken footprints in the sand?
And watched the waves devour them
And your presence disappear
You can either give a smile or shed a tear.

Have you ever seen the sun drown in the ocean
And felt the darkness creep up finally?
The stars and moon peep out then
So shy throughout the day
And spend the night just twinkling cross the bay.

Have you ever watched the flashing of the lighthouse
Its beam of light spread finger-like to sea?
It stands in all its glory
With head so proud and high
'A saviour in the night', the sailors cry.

Have you ever seen the mist coming rolling shorewards
And listened to the foghorn's deafening roar?
When the safety of the seamen
Will always be its test
If they're coming from the East or from the West.

Have you ever sat alone upon a cliff top
And seen and felt and heard the wondrous world?
If you say you've been there sometime
Then my friend, 'tis what I'll say
You've never been alone there; I've been with you all the way.
