BRIAN'S INTERESTS

Radio Amateur

I served my apprenticeship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with the British Ministry of Defence and gained an HNC. I was initially employed by the Procurement Executive, and was responsible for testing services radio communications equipment to detailed specifications and in the commissioning of radio automatic test equipment.

After 5 years with the MOD, I spent 15 years with Seismograph Service Ltd.., a geophysical exploration company, carrying out Velocity Surveys on and around oil rigs. This included overseas assignments as Field Engineer and 12 years as base manager in charge of operational units mainly in the Middle East, but also in Aberdeen, South Africa, Nigeria, and London. I am experienced in all Borehole Logging operations, especially Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSPs) and have an in-depth knowledge of the majority of oil rig operations.

For 5 years I was involved in the construction of electronic equipment used in geophysical oil exploration for Avalon Sciences Limited and Compagnie Gnrale de Gophysique (CGG). I was also responsible for carrying out quality control of data output from VSPs on behalf of Hydrosearch at oilfield well-sites for oil companies such as Lasmo, Phillips Petroleum and Ranger Oil.

During a downturn in oilfield exploration activities, I was responsible for managing a medical electronics servicing workshop for S&W Vickers. I profess to be an "expert"  in the construction, modification and maintenance of radio communications equipment. I hold a class ‘A’ amateur radio license, obtained in 1980.

I bought the Dunnet Head Restaurant and B&B in March 2000 and have done very little with radios since due to other commitments.  However, the GMOB from Mid Lanark Amateur Radio Society Interest Group came to Dunnet Head to enter the international competition CQWW in October 2001 and were so enamoured with the location they are coming back in 2002!
