There are 34 archaeological sites on Dunnet Head listed in the Canmore database. There is very little information concerning Dunnet Head and it’s archaeology. In the past this Site of Special Scientific Interest was surveyed and the details can be viewed at The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and at the Historical Environment Record which is maintained by The Highland Council.

The map on the wall map in the history archive / cafe at Dunnet Head shows some of interesting sites that visitors may like to walk to. The Long Byre, a natural feature in the hillside was used by the locals in the past to shelter cattle. It was believed the person in charge of the cows that day would have a stick and there could be no quarrel as to who would look after the animals. The Long Byre is a narrow long valley with high stone walls either side; this would provide much shelter from the strong north winds.

Another unusual find on Dunnet Head is the number of millstones. The stones would have been cut on site and the best ones would be used locally in the mills.
